2 Benefits To Using Color Grading Software

by Wade Wheeler

If you are a visual artist who does any of your work on computers, you know that you want to have the finished piece meet the vision you had in your head. However, there are a lot of things that go into that. One of them is to make sure that the colors work the way that you want. That doesn't always work as well as you would like it to, especially if you are using images that are going to be altered by any kind of image manipulation software. However, there are things that you can do to make sure that you end up with the piece that you are looking for, whether it's animation, a photograph, or something completely different. One of those things is to use color grading software.

Color Grading

Color grading is also called color correcting. There are a lot of things that go into color correcting. They can include things like bringing flesh tones in pictures back to the correct tones by adding in various undertones, which will let the person in the portrait look more like the actual person. It can also include normalizing color so that it will work across a number of devices with different kinds of displays and different levels of resolution. Trying to make sure that the color looks the same on a laptop and a phone screen can be difficult since they are different display types as well as different sizes. That's where color grading software comes in. There are a lot of benefits to using this software.

Global Changes

One benefit to using color grading software is that you can make global changes through the entire project. Instead of having to go through and fix each frame or readjust that particular shade throughout the entire project, you can just hit a button and have the program make changes all the way through, saving you a lot of time and energy.

Auto Adjust

Another benefit is that the software generally has an auto adjust feature. You can choose what you would like the software to adjust—brightness, color, shade, or any other adjustment—and the software will apply it to your project. That will allow you to do things like add-in filters or certain effects.

If you are a visual artist who uses computer-generated imagery (CGI) for any part of your program, you need to have color grading software to help you with your work.
