How To Prevent Mold In Your Water System

by Wade Wheeler

The downside of mold isn't just that musty smell when you walk into a room. Mold can cause serious respiratory issues and even skin irritation when a person is exposed to it. This can be even worse if the person in question is a child.

Trying to keep mold away from your water system may seem like a futile affair. However, understanding what allows mold to thrive in the first place can help you to keep mold out of your water system.

Keep the Place Dry

It's unlikely to find mold inside your pipes since it needs light to survive and the moving water will also be a problem. However, any dampness near your water system caused by a leak or even regular water use can provide the mold with what it needs to survive.

To prevent this, ensure that the places near your water system are kept dry. Any leaks should be fixed as quickly as possible. Two days is enough time for mold growth. Any spilt water should similarly be dried up as quickly as possible.

Use Mold Resistant Material

Water alone isn't enough for mold to grow. Mold also needs a medium that it can feed on. In your house, this could be anything from clothing and paper to wood and dirt. Therefore, a good approach to preventing mold growth is not to have such material near areas that are likely to get damp.

For example, you should avoid having rugs in your bathroom. The bathroom walls should also be made of tiles or some other mold-resistant material.

Disinfect After Mold Growth

Despite your best efforts, it's possible that mold may still grow in your home at some point. One reason for this is the fact that mold may grow in areas you may not be able to see. To prevent a recurrence, you'll need to disinfect anything that was affected by the mold growth. Without disinfecting such items or surfaces, you may fail to kill all the mold. This means the mold will be back a short while later.

Keep Your System Well Maintained

Leaks are one of the main causes for mold growth in homes. Unfortunately, leaks can occur in parts of your house that you can't see. This makes it difficult to notice the dampness until the mold has grown. Proper water system maintenance can reduce the likelihood of such events. Your system can also be inspected for any other risks of mold growth.
