Make Sure Your Stored Belongings Are Secure

by Wade Wheeler

When you place your items in a climate controlled self-storage unit, it's important to make sure that you protect your belongings to reduce the risk that they're stolen. You must also maintain adequate insurance in the event that they are stolen. Even though a storage unit can be very secure, there are some mistakes you can make that will place your belongings in jeopardy.

Remember to Lock It

Make sure to lock your storage unit. While this may seem obvious, leaving a unit unlocked can be easy when you don't test the door. Some doors might seem closed, but you may not realize that it's still in an unlocked position.

Try opening the door before leaving. If you do not leave yourself enough time when moving, you'll not only be likely to make this mistake, but may do a poor job placing your items in storage.

Keep in Contact

Keep in contact with the storage company. Usually, they will send a phone call or email if they find something wrong with your unit, such as if you left a door unlocked. Check your spam folder for missed emails.

Buy Insurance

Always insure your belongings. Climate controlled self-storage units will usually have you sign paperwork where you agree that they are not responsible for any lost or stolen belongings. If you have renter's insurance or homeowner's insurance, you may have some protection. However, you may find that only 10% of your belongings are covered under this policy. Talk to your insurance provider about adding an umbrella policy. If you are using a full service moving company, find out if they offer insurance programs.

Only Work With the Best

Make sure to choose a climate controlled storage unit that has the best security. You might want to save a few dollars, but you're best off with climate control that comes with security, surveillance cameras, and gated access. You'll want a secure gate that requires a code to enter the facility. Also, make sure they have exterior lighting.

Many storage facilities are beginning to add individual alarms that trip a silent alarm when a unit is accessed. When you enter a code to the front gate, this informs the computer that you're within the facility. But if you're not within the facility, an alarm will trip when someone else tries to access your belongings. By knowing which security features the facility has, you can have peace-of-mind.
