3 Tips For Breaking Into The Hotel Industry

by Wade Wheeler

The hospitality industry has shown steady growth over the years, making it a reliable area to work in. Once you establish yourself in the hotel industry, you will likely have the opportunity to move up to management, or transfer to a hotel in a different city if you want to have a new adventure. Many hotel industry veterans even go on to start their own hotels. If you enjoy helping customers and have impeccable service standards, then hospitality jobs just might be right for you. Here are a few tips for breaking into this dynamic industry:

Start With an Entry-Level Hospitality Job

Even if you have a college degree and are hoping to go into hospitality management, it's usually wise to apply for entry-level jobs if you are brand new to the industry. This allows you to learn the ropes and also gives you relevant experience to add to your resume. You may also hear about new positions before they are posted externally, or become eligible for promotions based on performance. You will likely find that knowing how to be a front desk clerk or work in housekeeping will make you even better at your job if you move up to management roles later on.

Focus on Transferable Skills

One way to get a job in a brand new industry is to focus on transferable skills on your resume and in interviews. Think about the qualities and skills most hotels are looking for and then determine which of these you already have. For example, maybe you have honed your customer service, interpersonal, and organizational skills as an administrative assistant.

Consider Seasonal Hospitality Work

Another way to get your foot in the door, especially if you find job openings in your area to be very competitive, is to look for seasonal hospitality work. Many hotels hire extra people during busy seasons, which may mean summer if you live near tourist attractions, or the holiday season in some areas.

When you apply for a temporary, seasonal role, be sure to let your manager that you are open to being hired on full-time once your contract is up. If you do the best job you are capable of and impress your colleagues, you may find yourself with a permanent position.

Working in the hotel industry is exciting, rewarding, and can lead to steadily increasing responsibility and income over time. Following these tips will help you get your foot in the door.
